Week 1 Picks: Hawaii +21

Consider Cal’s 2015 defensive stats:
*Gave up 453 yards per game
*Gave up 209 yards rushing per game
*Gave up 30 points per game

Despite these horrendous numbers, Cal was able to power through to an 8-5 record mostly by riding the arm of all-time passing leader Jared Goff. But this year, Goff is gone to the NFL; replaced by Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb. In addition to Goff, Cal is also losing its TOP SIX receivers from 2015. Overall, The Golden Bears are losing a whopping 77% of their offensive production from a season ago.

And Cal’s defense will probably just as bad as it was a year ago – especially considering that the Bears must replace their Top SIX tacklers.

But maybe the losses on offense and the horrendous defense won’t matter against a team like Hawaii? The Rainbow Warriors were abysmal last season, finishing an anemic 3-9. And most prognosticators pick Hawaii to finish at our near the bottom in the MWC.

I think Hawaii has a shot to play with Cal. The Warriors have a new coach and return Nine starters on offense. Among the returnees are the QB, the top Five rushers, and 73 career starts on the OL. So can Hawaii’s veteran offensive unit succeed against a pathetic Cal defense? I believe they will. If Hawaii can establish the run, they’ll be in this game.

Hawaii will play inspired football – as they often do on the opening game of the season. Over the past five years, Hawaii has played a PAC 12 school on the opening day….and have covered the spread on all five occasions.

I think they will do so again.
